Why Portuguese, here
Mumbai runs on finance, trade, shipping and media
Mumbai's Portuguese learners are almost all attached to a trade desk. One set buys vegetable oil from Brazil, the other buys pulses from Mozambique, and each is trying to read a contract, a customs notice or a supplier's email without going through an interpreter every time.
Mumbai's demand is trade-shaped rather than factory-shaped. Export desks, shipping lines, consulates and banks need working proficiency for correspondence and negotiation rather than shop-floor instruction, and the learners are usually individuals whose employer will reimburse rather than cohorts booked by HR.
Brazilian export desks and Lusophone African markets. There is effectively no group demand anywhere in India, so this runs one to one — which is precisely why so few providers offer it at all.
Who learns Portuguese in Mumbai
The Solvent Extractors' Association of India, the Mumbai-based body that tracks India's edible-oil trade, reports that the country buys several million tonnes of soyoil a year from Brazil and Argentina, and Mumbai's oil brokerages sit in the middle of that trade. Sunvin Group, a Mumbai vegetable-oil brokerage running since 1979, is one of the firms whose staff deal directly with Brazilian suppliers on price and shipment terms, and it is this kind of desk, not a language-school brochure, that produces most of Mumbai's Portuguese enquiries.
The second source is pulses. Mozambique supplies most of India's pigeon pea imports under a government-to-government arrangement running since 2016, and when shipments backed up at Mozambican ports in 2023, it was a Mumbai-based importer on the phone to customs and shipping agents there, not head office. Mumbai has a small set of pulses traders who deal with Mozambique routinely enough to need working Portuguese rather than English correspondence alone.
Sitting CAPLE or Celpe-Bras from Mumbai
CAPLE, the European Portuguese exam, has two live centres in India. The Camões Cultural Centre in New Delhi runs sittings at all levels from A1 to B2 in May and November, and the Camões Centre for Portuguese Language and Culture in Goa, the closer option from Mumbai, runs its own sittings at the same levels in July and November under a protocol it signed with CAPLE in 2015. Registration for either goes through CAPLE's own portal, and it is worth checking which levels are open for the session you want before booking travel.
Celpe-Bras, the Brazilian exam, is a different case. INEP administers it through a list of overseas posts that is redrawn each cycle, and recent listings of active international centres do not show one in India, so a Mumbai candidate should check that cycle's edital before assuming a local sitting is available, and budget for travel to whichever post is open, which has in the past meant elsewhere in Asia rather than India.
Two Portuguese, one trade route each
Brazil and Lusophone Africa do not use quite the same written Portuguese, and Mumbai's two trade routes fall on either side of that split. Correspondence with a São Paulo or Rio Grande do Sul supplier runs in Brazilian Portuguese, which is what Celpe-Bras certifies. Correspondence with a Mozambican exporter or customs office follows the European written standard that Portugal's former African territories kept after independence, which is what CAPLE certifies. A Mumbai learner working both routes can end up needing both certificates.
On hours, Cambridge English's guideline figures for reaching a CEFR level from zero put B1 at roughly 350-400 hours of instruction and B2 at 500-600. At four hours a week across two one-to-one sessions, a plausible schedule for someone fitting lessons around a trading desk, that works out to around 94 weeks, about 22 months, to B1, and around 138 weeks, close to two years and eight months, to B2. Most of Mumbai's contract-reading learners stop at B1, enough to follow a supplier call and read a shipment notice without help.

Questions
Portuguese in Mumbai: what learners ask
Where do I take the CAPLE exam if I'm based in Mumbai?
The nearer of India's two centres is the Camões Centre in Goa, which runs CAPLE sittings at A1-B2 in July and November; New Delhi's Camões Cultural Centre runs the same levels in May and November. Check the current session on CAPLE's registration portal before booking.
Is there a Celpe-Bras centre in Mumbai?
Not on recent listings of overseas posts. INEP redraws its list of international centres each cycle, so check that cycle's edital rather than assuming India has a standing centre.
Do I need Brazilian or European Portuguese for edible-oil trading?
Brazilian, since the counterpart desks sit in Brazil. If the same role also covers Mozambique or Angola, European Portuguese, the CAPLE standard, is the more useful second certificate.
How long does it take to reach a working level in Portuguese?
Using Cambridge English's guideline hours, around 94 weeks at four hours a week gets a learner from zero to B1; B2 takes closer to two and a half years at the same pace.
