Why Portuguese, here

Ahmedabad runs on pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles and engineering exports

Ahmedabad's Portuguese demand comes from two pharmaceutical majors with standing Brazil businesses, Torrent Pharmaceuticals and Zydus Lifesciences, and the learner is usually a senior export or regulatory manager already handling that account.

Gujarat's exporters deal with Latin America, Africa and Europe, and the requirement is usually commercial rather than technical — quoting, negotiating and holding a customer relationship in the buyer's language. Programmes here are often small and senior.

Brazilian export desks and Lusophone African markets. There is effectively no group demand anywhere in India, so this runs one to one — which is precisely why so few providers offer it at all.

Who learns Portuguese in Ahmedabad

Torrent Pharmaceuticals, headquartered in Ahmedabad, booked Rs 318 crore of Brazil revenue in the July-September 2025 quarter, up 21 per cent on the same quarter a year earlier, and is commonly ranked as the top Indian pharma company in the Brazilian market by revenue. Whoever holds that account inside Torrent has a direct commercial reason to sit in on a distributor call without routing it through a translator first.

Zydus Lifesciences, the city's other pharma major, entered Brazil in 2007 by acquiring Química e Farmacêutica Nikkho do Brasil, which became Zydus Healthcare Brasil. That subsidiary is now approaching two decades old, long enough that Ahmedabad has a standing bench of managers who deal with it across postings rather than one team that learned the language once and moved on.

Sitting CAPLE or Celpe-Bras from Ahmedabad

Gujarat has no Camões presence of its own, so Ahmedabad candidates for CAPLE are choosing between the same two centres as the rest of India: New Delhi, sitting all levels from A1 to B2 in May and November, and Goa, sitting the same levels in July and November. Both are roughly a flight away rather than a drive.

The same applies to Celpe-Bras, and Ahmedabad has no advantage over the rest of India there either: INEP does not carry a standing India post on its recent overseas listings, and the list of open centres changes with each cycle's edital, so check that edital before fixing a study timeline around a particular sitting.

A study plan for a small, senior programme

Ahmedabad's Portuguese classes tend to be small and senior, which usually means less weekly time available rather than more. At three hours a week, a schedule that fits around a manager's calendar more easily than five or six would, Cambridge English's guideline hours put B1 at about 125 weeks, roughly two years and five months, from zero, and B2 at around 183 weeks, close to three and a half years.

In practice, most of Ahmedabad's learners are targeting B1: enough to follow a Brazilian distributor's call and read a straightforward email, with denser regulatory or contractual documents still going through a translator.

Questions

Portuguese in Ahmedabad: what learners ask

Where do Ahmedabad-based pharma staff sit the CAPLE exam?

The two centres serving all of India are New Delhi's Camões Cultural Centre (May and November) and the Camões Centre in Goa (July and November); neither is in Gujarat, so travel is part of the plan either way.

Is Torrent Pharmaceuticals' Brazil business big enough to justify learning Portuguese?

Its Brazil revenue was Rs 318 crore in the September 2025 quarter, up 21 per cent year on year, which is why export and regulatory staff working that account are among the more common enrolments in the city.

Can a senior manager learn enough Portuguese for distributor calls without a long course?

At around three hours a week, a realistic pace for a senior schedule, B1 takes roughly two years and five months using standard CEFR guideline hours; there is no shortcut that also holds up.

Is there a Celpe-Bras centre in Gujarat or nearby?

No. Check INEP's current edital, since the list of overseas centres is redrawn each cycle and has not included a standing India post in recent rounds.
