Portuguese classes in Pune

Pune's Portuguese demand has nothing to do with the German-supplier belt that drives most of the city's language teaching. It comes from Praj Industries, the Pune-headquartered bioenergy engineering company, and its contracts to build ethanol plants in Brazil.

Pune is the densest concentration of German-owned and German-supplying manufacturing in India. The Chakan, Ranjangaon and Talegaon belts are full of tier-one suppliers reporting into German parent companies, and Hinjawadi's IT firms run delivery for German and Japanese clients. It is the one Indian city where we teach on site as often as online.

Brazilian export desks and Lusophone African markets. There is effectively no group demand anywhere in India, so this runs one to one — which is precisely why so few providers offer it at all.

Praj Industries, among the world's ten largest ethanol-technology suppliers, signed a contract in May 2024 with Be8, a major Brazilian biodiesel company, to provide the process licence, design and engineering for a 1,500-tonne-a-day wheat-or-corn ethanol plant at Passo Fundo in Rio Grande do Sul. It has separately delivered a starch-to-ethanol plant, capable of 63,000 litres a day from corn, to Fermap Indústria de Álcool elsewhere in Brazil.

None of this touches Chakan, Ranjangaon or Hinjawadi, where Pune's German and Japanese-facing engineers work. The Portuguese learners here are specifically the project engineers and managers on Praj's Brazil-facing teams, who need enough spoken Portuguese to run a commissioning meeting on site without relaying every instruction through an interpreter.

Pune sits closer to Goa than any of the other three cities in this set, which makes the Camões Centre in Goa, running CAPLE at A1-B2 in July and November, the more practical of India's two centres for a Pune-based candidate. The alternative is New Delhi's Camões Cultural Centre, sitting the same levels in May and November, which is a longer trip either way.

Celpe-Bras remains the harder exam to plan around. INEP's list of overseas posts is redrawn each cycle, and recent lists do not carry a standing India centre, so a Pune candidate preparing for the Brazilian exam specifically should check that cycle's edital before assuming a local or even a national sitting.

Commissioning deadlines push Praj's project teams to prepare faster than a typical corporate learner. At six hours a week, split across three one-to-one sessions, a realistic load for someone with a site date already on the calendar, Cambridge English's guideline hours put B1 at around 63 weeks, roughly 14 months, from zero, and B2 at about 92 weeks, close to 21 months.

A plant commissioning in Rio Grande do Sul has a fixed date regardless of the assigned engineer's current level, and that fixed date is what sets the pace of study, more than any curriculum plan would on its own.
