Japanese classes in Mumbai

Mumbai has its own JLPT test site, administered not by a separate Mumbai body but by JALTAP, the Pune-based association that also runs the Pune centre. Banking and trading, not manufacturing, drive demand for Japanese in this city: MUFG opened its first India branch in Mumbai in 1953, and Mizuho has run five branches nationally with more than 25 years of presence here.

Mumbai's demand is trade-shaped rather than factory-shaped. Export desks, shipping lines, consulates and banks need working proficiency for correspondence and negotiation rather than shop-floor instruction, and the learners are usually individuals whose employer will reimburse rather than cohorts booked by HR.

Japanese employers in India, the Specified Skilled Worker route, and engineering teams supporting Japanese parent companies. N4 is the practical threshold for the work visa route; N2 is what most employers actually want.

MUFG Bank's Mumbai branch, its original 1953 entry point into India, now sits alongside newer branches the bank has opened in Delhi, Chennai, Neemrana and Bengaluru; in 2022 MUFG became the first Japanese bank to open inside Gujarat's GIFT City. Mizuho Bank separately runs five branches across India with a Mumbai presence going back more than 25 years. The Consulate-General of Japan in Mumbai, whose jurisdiction covers Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, adds a further layer of trade and visa-linked demand on top of the banks.

Learners here are mostly individual bank and trading-desk staff rather than a cohort booked by one HR department, and the language they need is correspondence and negotiation-level Japanese rather than the shop-floor instructions that Pune or Chennai's plants ask for.

Beyond banking, at least two of Japan's sogo shosha trading houses keep offices in the city: Mitsubishi Corporation, at BKC, and Sumitomo Corporation India, whose Mumbai branch traces back to 1950 even though the company's India headquarters sits in Delhi. These offices are small by headcount, commonly a few dozen staff between them, but the work is contract and negotiation-level Japanese rather than the technical or shop-floor vocabulary manufacturing roles ask for.

Mumbai's test site is run through jlpt.jaltap.org.in, the same portal JALTAP uses for its Pune centre, and the exam sits twice a year on fixed Sundays in July and December. Because the Consulate-General's jurisdiction runs across four other states, candidates from Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, which have no test site of their own, commonly register here rather than travelling to Delhi or Pune instead.

The GIFT City branch MUFG opened in 2022 is a specific, recent example of what the Mumbai-linked Japanese-language job market actually looks like: compliance and relationship-management staff who need working Japanese for calls with Tokyo, not factory-floor vocabulary. Commonly cited cumulative study-hour guidelines put N3 at roughly 660-770 hours and N2 at roughly 960-1,120 hours from zero; for a bank or trading-desk employee studying around six hours a week between class and self-study, N3 is a realistic two-to-two-and-a-half-year target and N2 closer to three years.
