Why Japanese, here
Kolkata runs on trade, engineering and education
Kolkata's JLPT centre is run by the Indo-Japan Welfare and Cultural Association (IJWCA), and the city's most current source of Japanese business interest is New Town's data-centre corridor, where NTT is building a three-building campus, alongside a September 2026 visit from Japan's state minister for foreign affairs to discuss investment.
Kolkata has long-standing language teaching through its universities and cultural institutes, so learners often arrive with some grounding and a specific certificate in mind. Demand is steadier and more individual than corporate.
Japanese employers in India, the Specified Skilled Worker route, and engineering teams supporting Japanese parent companies. N4 is the practical threshold for the work visa route; N2 is what most employers actually want.
Who learns Japanese in Kolkata
NTT announced in February 2023 that it would invest roughly ₹2,000 crore ($241.5 million) in a three-data-centre campus at the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in New Town, on a 7.5-acre plot, with the first building alone running to 100,000 square feet. Between 10 and 13 September 2026, Japan's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Kunimitsu Ayano, visited Kolkata and West Bengal specifically to discuss further Japanese investment with the state government, and separately visited Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers to talk about defence cooperation.
IJWCA itself runs a Learn Japanese programme in the city, in beginner through advanced stages of six months each, which is one reason learners here often arrive with some existing grounding rather than starting from zero, as this page's general Kolkata note already covers. Data-centre operations work of the kind NTT is building typically needs Japanese for liaison with Tokyo-based technical and project teams rather than the shop-floor Japanese that Chennai or Pune's manufacturing belts ask for.
The Japan Foundation's Indian office has also run teacher-training activity directly in the city: a Japanese-language teachers' workshop was held in Kolkata on 9 February 2025, aimed at strengthening how local instructors teach ahead of IJWCA's own programme levels. Between that workshop and NTT's data-centre build, Kolkata's Japanese-language infrastructure is being reinforced from the teaching side and the employer side at roughly the same time.
Sitting the JLPT from Kolkata
IJWCA, based on Ballygunge Circular Road, administers the JLPT on the Japan Foundation's behalf for both the July and December sittings, registering candidates through its own site at ijwca.org. It is one of only a handful of Indian cities, alongside Santiniketan in the same state, with any local JLPT presence at all, which gives West Bengal candidates an advantage over Gujarat or Telangana learners who have to travel.
What a data-centre economy asks for
NTT's New Town campus, once operational, is the kind of employer that needs project-coordination and documentation-level Japanese rather than conversational fluency, closer to N3 or N2 than to the N4 a factory floor typically asks for. Commonly cited cumulative study-hour guidelines put N3 at roughly 660-770 hours and N2 at roughly 960-1,120 hours from zero; at five hours a week of combined class and self-study, that is about a year and a half for N3 and closer to two and a half years for N2.
