French classes in Kolkata

Kolkata's Alliance Française du Bengale has run TCF Canada since April 2019, and the city's relationship with French runs deeper than most: Chandannagar, a former French colonial town 37 km up the Hooghly, still keeps its own French-heritage museum inside the old governor's residence.

Kolkata has long-standing language teaching through its universities and cultural institutes, so learners often arrive with some grounding and a specific certificate in mind. Demand is steadier and more individual than corporate.

Overwhelmingly Canadian permanent residence. French proficiency is one of the highest-value additions available to an Express Entry score, and the TEF or TCF sitting already costs around ₹26,000 — so the preparation decision is about not wasting it.

Most learners booking classes in Kolkata are individual Express Entry applicants rather than a corporate cohort, in keeping with the city's generally steadier, more individually driven pattern of language learning through its universities and cultural institutes. Dassault Systèmes keeps an office on the 18th floor of Imagin Techpark in Salt Lake's Sector V, which gives the city a small French-technology employer alongside the immigration-driven majority.

A smaller group arrives already holding some French from school or an earlier attempt at DELF, and that head start typically covers most of the 150 to 200 additional hours a B1 learner needs to reach B2, which at six hours a week is about 25 to 33 weeks, a school-taught Kolkata learner can sometimes reach exam-ready B2 in under eight months, far faster than someone starting from zero. Alliance Française du Bengale itself runs beyond the city too, with an annex as far as Bhubaneswar, which says something about how thin dedicated French teaching still is across eastern India outside Kolkata.

Alliance Française du Bengale has been an accredited centre for TCF Canada since April 2019 and runs its sessions from its Park Mansions campus on Park Street. It does not run TEF Canada; since TCF Canada carries identical weight for Express Entry scoring, most Kolkata candidates simply sit TCF Canada rather than travelling for the other exam, and there is little practical reason to choose otherwise unless a candidate has already sat a TEF-format practice test and clearly prefers it.

Chandannagar was ceded to India in 1951 under the Treaty of Cession, and its Institut de Chandernagore, set up the following year by the Ministry of External Affairs inside the former French governor's residence, is now a protected national monument holding 18th-century French maps, coins, sculpture and a French literary archive. It is not a language-teaching or exam centre, but it is a rare, tangible piece of the French connection this business teaches towards, and a handful of Kolkata learners mention it as part of why they started. A weekend visit before the first class is a reasonable, low-cost way to make the decision to learn French feel less abstract than a CLB score on a spreadsheet.
