French classes in Chennai

Chennai is Tamil Nadu's only accredited e-TEF Canada centre, and it is also the practical exam city for the historically French-linked Union Territory of Puducherry next door, which has no TEF or TCF centre of its own. Learners split between individual Express Entry applicants and staff at Chennai's two large French automotive and engineering employers.

Chennai's automotive belt has a strong Japanese and Korean presence alongside European manufacturers, so demand skews towards Japanese and Korean where Pune's skews German. Shop-floor and quality teams need spoken competence more than written.

Overwhelmingly Canadian permanent residence. French proficiency is one of the highest-value additions available to an Express Entry score, and the TEF or TCF sitting already costs around ₹26,000 — so the preparation decision is about not wasting it.

Renault India is headquartered in Chennai and took full ownership of its Chennai manufacturing plant from Nissan in August 2025; the plant runs at over 400,000 units of annual capacity and has produced more than 2.8 million vehicles since 2010, over a million of them exported to more than 100 countries. Valeo runs an expanded Group Technical Centre at Pacifica Tech Park in Navalur, with a cybersecurity test lab and over 1,000 workstations, and its Chennai and Bangalore engineering hubs together employ more than 3,700 engineers out of the more than 7,500 people Valeo employs across India, over half of them engineers.

Neither company requires French for most Indian engineering roles, but a French-facing posting or a call with a Paris counterpart is where the language actually gets used, which makes this a smaller and more targeted group than Chennai's Express Entry applicants. Puducherry, about 160 km south, adds a different kind of learner: some residents descended from the Union Territory's French community, eligible for French nationality going back to the 1956 cession, occasionally start or continue French study here.

Alliance Française of Madras describes itself as the only accredited examination centre in Tamil Nadu for e-TEF Canada and e-TEFAQ, running those sessions from its Nungambakkam campus. It does not run TCF Canada; that exam is not offered anywhere in Tamil Nadu, and Bengaluru is the nearest confirmed centre for a candidate who wants it specifically rather than TEF Canada.

Alliance Française de Pondichéry, founded in 1889, and the Lycée Français International de Pondichéry, teaching since 1826, keep French alive in Puducherry as culture and schooling, but neither runs a Canada exam sitting, so anyone in Puducherry booking TEF Canada travels to Chennai to do it. It is a short, well-worn route for a Union Territory where French was once an official administrative language, rather than a new one this business is creating.

A learner working at a plausible seven hours a week, split between a group class and independent practice, is looking at roughly 86 to 107 weeks to cover the usual 600 to 750 hour guideline for B2 from zero, nearer two years than one, which is worth planning for honestly from the first session rather than discovering it nine months in.
