Korean classes in Chennai

Chennai's Korean-language demand is set by its automotive belt at Irungattukottai and Sriperumbudur, where Hyundai Motor India and its Korean parts makers run one of the largest single concentrations of Korean manufacturing in the country. It is also the only city in Tamil Nadu with an official TOPIK test centre, run through InKo Centre, which has anchored Indo-Korean cultural and language work here since 2006.

Chennai's automotive belt has a strong Japanese and Korean presence alongside European manufacturers, so demand skews towards Japanese and Korean where Pune's skews German. Shop-floor and quality teams need spoken competence more than written.

Hyundai Motor India runs two plants across 535 acres in the Irungattukottai-Sriperumbudur belt, employing around 9,500 people, and of its 119 component vendors, 42 are Korean companies supplying engines, headlamps, seats, body parts and air conditioning. Quality and production staff dealing directly with those vendors are the steadiest source of demand for spoken Korean in the city.

Two of Hyundai's own group companies sit inside the same SIPCOT industrial park: Hyundai Mobis India, which supplies parts and after-sales service across Hyundai, Genesis and Kia, and Hyundai Transys, which makes transmissions and seats through its India operation. Both run as standing operations rather than project sites, so the Korean-language need here is ongoing shop-floor and vendor-liaison work rather than a one-off training batch.

Chennai is also the only city in Tamil Nadu with its own Korean consulate, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea, on Dr Radha Krishnan Road in Mylapore, which handles visa issuance for the state rather than routing everything through Delhi. That adds a second kind of learner to the automotive cluster: people dealing with visa paperwork, university applications and consular correspondence rather than a production line.

InKo Centre in T Nagar is Chennai's TOPIK venue; the 109th TOPIK sitting is scheduled for 15 November 2026 at Shri Shankarial Sundarbai Shasun Jain College for Women, with 100 seats each for TOPIK I and TOPIK II. Registration opens months ahead, from 6 August 2026, on a first-come basis through a Google Form followed by a confirmation email, so a Chennai candidate has to commit to a sitting well before the exam date rather than deciding a few weeks out.

InKo Centre was set up in May 2006 to build cultural and language ties between India and Korea, backed by TVS Motor Company and Hyundai Motor India among others, and it moved into larger premises with a cafe, gallery and studio in 2015. Its language programme runs as a King Sejong Institute course delivered online in partnership with Sangmyung University in Korea, which gives a Chennai learner without an automotive-company sponsor a direct, foundation-backed route into Korean rather than a generic private tutor.
