Why Japanese, here

Hyderabad runs on pharmaceuticals, life sciences and IT

Hyderabad has no JLPT test site of its own; candidates travel to Bengaluru or Chennai, the two nearest official centres. What the city does have, uniquely among the cities on this list, is a state government pipeline training nurses and caregivers in Japanese for Japan's Specified Skilled Worker programme.

Hyderabad's pharmaceutical and contract-research businesses export heavily into Latin America and Europe, which makes Spanish and Portuguese unusually commercial here compared with the rest of India. Regulatory and dossier work drives more of the demand than conversation does.

Japanese employers in India, the Specified Skilled Worker route, and engineering teams supporting Japanese parent companies. N4 is the practical threshold for the work visa route; N2 is what most employers actually want.

Who learns Japanese in Hyderabad

The Telangana Overseas Manpower Company (TOMCOM) has placed nurses from its first two training batches into hospital jobs in Japan under the Specified Skilled Worker route, with residential Japanese-language training held in Hyderabad itself. In September 2025 the Telangana government signed a further MoU with the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) to run two years of Japanese and German language training inside government nursing colleges: N4 or N3 for care workers, N2 or N1 for registered nurses, who also need to read medical terminology. A separate partnership between Raj Group and Tsukui Corporation, one of Japan's larger nursing-care employers, feeds candidates from this pipeline into placement.

This is a different learner profile from the industrial demand driving other cities on this list: state-sponsored, healthcare-specific, and aimed squarely at N4 through N1 rather than the N2 a corporate posting usually asks for. Alongside it, Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) inaugurated a joint research centre at the IIT Hyderabad Technology Research Park in May 2026, working initially on synthesis routes for active pharmaceutical ingredients and moving into wider healthcare, advanced-manufacturing and electric-mobility research; the opening drew representatives from JICA and JETRO alongside DNP itself, which is a smaller and separate source of demand from the pharma and IT side of the city's economy.

Sitting the JLPT from Hyderabad

With no host institution in Telangana, Hyderabad candidates register at Bengaluru, through BNK's jlpt.bnkindia.in, or at Chennai, through ABK-AOTS Dosokai's jlptchennaiindia.com, both a comparable distance away and both holding the July and December sittings. The EFLU-run caregiver and nursing tracks build travel to one of these two centres directly into the training timeline, since the certificate itself is the qualifying step for the SSW visa route.

N4 to N1 on the nursing timeline

EFLU's programme is built around roughly nine months of intensive language instruction before the qualifying exam attempt, which lines up with commonly cited cumulative guidelines of 360-420 hours for N4 and 660-770 hours for N3 if the training runs close to full-time. Registered nurses aiming for N2 or N1, the bar the MoU sets for that role, face a longer runway, commonly cited at 960-1,120 hours for N2 and upward of 1,050 hours for N1, closer to two years even at an intensive pace.

Questions

Japanese in Hyderabad: what learners ask

Is there a JLPT test centre in Hyderabad?

No. Candidates travel to Bengaluru or Chennai, the two nearest official centres, for both the July and December sittings.

What is the TOMCOM programme for Japan-bound nurses?

A Telangana government initiative that has already placed nurses from Hyderabad in Japanese hospitals under the Specified Skilled Worker route, with Japanese-language training run locally before departure.

What JLPT level do caregivers versus nurses need for Japan?

Under the Telangana government's EFLU-run programme, care workers are trained to N4 or N3, and registered nurses to N2 or N1, with the higher level tied to reading medical terminology.

Is Hyderabad's Japanese demand mostly IT or healthcare?

Healthcare and the state-run SSW caregiver and nursing pipeline are the most distinctive part of it; Dai Nippon Printing's R&D centre at IIT Hyderabad is a smaller, separate source of demand.
